How Long Do Bearded Dragons Live?
Bearded dragons live 8 to 12 years in a well-run tank and 3 to 5 in a badly run one. Almost every early death traces to the same four things: no working UVB, wrong temperatures, an adult still eating like a baby, and something it should not have swallowed.

How long do bearded dragons live? The numbers
| Type | Typical | Excellent care | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Well-kept beardie | 8 to 12 | 15+ | UVB replaced every 6 to 12 months |
| Breeding female | slightly shorter | Egg laying is costly; calcium and rest | |
| Poor husbandry | 3 to 6 | Metabolic bone disease, impaction, gout |
Bearded Dragon years to human years
Scaled to a typical bearded dragon lifespan of about 10 years. Pick a different type in the converter above and the numbers shift with it.
| Bearded Dragon age | Human equivalent | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | ~14 | Juvenile |
| 2 years | ~22 | Young adult |
| 5 years | ~43 | Adult |
| 8 years | ~63 | Mature |
| 10 years | ~75 | Senior |
| 12 years | ~84 | Senior |
| 15 years | ~95 | Senior |
| 20 years | ~110 | Senior |
Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for bearded dragons. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.
What actually adds years
Working UVB, replaced on schedule. A T5 linear UVB tube (10 to 12 percent) across the tank, unfiltered by glass or fine mesh, replaced every 6 to 12 months even if it still glows. Without it, calcium cannot be used and metabolic bone disease follows.
A real heat gradient. Basking spot 38 to 42ยฐC for adults (up to 43 for babies), cool end 24 to 27, night no lower than about 18. Measured with a digital probe, not a stick-on dial.
An adult diet that is mostly plants. Babies eat mostly insects; adults should be 70 to 80 percent greens and vegetables (collards, mustard greens, squash) with insects a few times a week. Adult beardies fed like babies get fat, gouty and short-lived.
Calcium and gut-load. Dust insects with calcium (D3 as your vet advises), gut-load them properly, and never feed insects bigger than the space between the dragon's eyes.
Impaction and parasite prevention. Solid substrate (tile, paper, non-adhesive liner) rather than loose sand for most keepers; annual faecal tests for coccidia and pinworms; regular soaks.
A reptile vet. A yearly exam catches MBD, gout, kidney disease and yellow fungus early.
Bearded Dragon lifespan FAQ
How long do bearded dragons live?
8 to 12 years typically. Excellent husbandry pushes that to 15 plus; the verified record is Sebastian at 18 years.
How long do bearded dragons live in captivity versus the wild?
Longer in captivity: wild dragons rarely pass 5 to 8 because of predators, drought and disease. A well-kept pet lives 8 to 12.
How old is my bearded dragon in human years?
A rough life-stage guide: a 1-year-old is a teenager (about 14), a 5-year-old is middle-aged (around 43), and a 10-year-old is a senior (around 75). Use the converter above.
What do bearded dragons usually die of?
Metabolic bone disease from poor UVB and calcium, impaction from loose substrate or oversized insects, kidney disease and gout from dehydration and too much protein, and infections caught late.
Do female bearded dragons live shorter lives?
Often slightly. Females lay eggs even without a male, which costs calcium and energy; a lay box, extra calcium and vet checks reduce the toll.
Can a bearded dragon live 20 years?
Not verified. Records stop at 18. Plan for 10 to 15 and be pleased with more.
