How Long Do Tortoises Live? Lifespan by Species

A tortoise is the pet that goes in the will. Hermann's and Greek tortoises live 50 to 80 years, sulcatas pass 70, and the giant species run past 100. Most die young of exactly two things: wrong food and wrong light.

TL;DR: Pet tortoises typically live 50 to 100 years: Hermann's 50 to 80, Greek 50 to 100, Russian 40 to 50, red-footed 30 to 50, sulcata and leopard 70 to 100. Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise, is over 190. UVB, heat, a low-protein weed diet and correct hibernation decide it.

Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for tortoises. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.

What actually adds years

UVB and heat that reach the shell. A strong UVB source (or real sunshine) and a basking spot around 32 to 35°C. Without UVB, calcium cannot be used: soft shells, pyramiding, metabolic bone disease.

The right diet for the species. Mediterranean and Russian tortoises eat weeds and leafy greens, high fibre, low protein, no fruit and no dog food; protein-rich diets cause pyramiding and kidney failure. Red-foots need some fruit and occasional protein. Feed the species, not the tortoise-shaped generalisation.

Hibernation done properly. Hermann's, Greek and Russian tortoises hibernate; done wrong (too warm, too long, an unwell animal) it kills. Weigh before and during, use a fridge or controlled box, and skip it for sick or underweight tortoises.

Humidity for hatchlings. Dry-raised babies pyramid. A humid hide and regular soaks in the first years build a smooth shell.

Predator and garden safety. Dogs, foxes and rats maul tortoises; lawnmowers and ponds kill them. Secure enclosures, supervised garden time.

A reptile vet and a plan for later. Faecal checks for worms, beak and nail trims, and a written plan for who takes over: your tortoise will probably outlive you.

A tortoise with bubbles at the nose, open-mouth breathing or a swollen eye has a respiratory or vitamin A problem. Respiratory infections in tortoises turn serious quickly, especially around hibernation. Warm the enclosure and see a reptile vet.

Tortoise lifespan FAQ

How long do tortoises live?

Most pet species 50 to 100 years: Hermann's 50 to 80, Greek 50 to 100, Russian 40 to 50, red-footed 30 to 50, sulcata and leopard 70 to 100. Giant tortoises live well past 100.

What is the oldest tortoise ever?

Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise on St Helena, is over 190 and the oldest known living land animal. Among pet species, Hermann's and Greek tortoises past 100 are documented.

How long do Russian tortoises live?

40 to 50 years typically, some to 80. They are hardy burrowers that hibernate and do badly in damp conditions.

How old is a 20-year-old tortoise in human years?

For a Hermann's, by life stage, roughly a person around 30: a young adult with most of its life ahead. Use the converter above.

Why do pet tortoises die young?

Wrong diet (protein, fruit, dog food), no UVB, cold or damp housing, badly managed hibernation, and predators. Almost all of it is preventable.

Do tortoises need to hibernate?

Mediterranean and Russian species do, and it is healthy when done correctly. Tropical species (red-footed, sulcata, leopard) do not hibernate and must be kept warm year-round.
