Cat Years to Human Years Calculator
The 7-year rule is a myth โ cats hit the equivalent of 15 human years in their first 12 months, then slow right down. Enter your cat's exact age (months matter for kittens) to get the human equivalent, their veterinary life stage, and what care that stage actually calls for.
The real conversion (and where 7-years comes from)
Veterinary bodies use a curve, not a multiplier: year one โ 15 human years, year two adds โ 9 (a 2-year-old cat โ 24), and each year after adds โ 4. The old "multiply by 7" rule was a rough dogs-and-cats average that fits neither species โ it makes kittens absurdly young and senior cats absurdly old.
| Cat age | Human equivalent | Life stage (AAHA/AAFP) |
|---|---|---|
| 6 months | ~10 years | Kitten |
| 1 year | ~15 years | Junior / young adult |
| 2 years | ~24 years | Young adult |
| 5 years | ~36 years | Young adult |
| 8 years | ~48 years | Mature adult |
| 10 years | ~56 years | Senior |
| 15 years | ~76 years | Senior |
| 20 years | ~96 years | Super senior |
Cat age FAQ
How old is a 10-year-old cat in human years?
About 56. This is the age vets class cats as seniors and recommend twice-yearly checkups with bloodwork.
Is 1 cat year really 7 human years?
No. A 1-year-old cat is like a 15-year-old human, and after age 2 each cat year is worth about 4 human years, not 7.
How long do indoor cats live?
Commonly 12โ18 years; 20+ is not rare. Outdoor access shortens average lifespan substantially โ traffic, fights, predators and infectious disease are the main causes.
When should my cat get senior bloodwork?
From the mature-adult stage (7โ10) most vets recommend annual bloodwork, moving to every 6 months after 10. Kidney disease and hyperthyroidism โ the big two of feline aging โ are far more manageable caught early.
My cat is 20+. What's the human equivalent?
Roughly 96 at 20, adding ~4 per year after. Cats in their twenties are genuinely elderly โ comfort, kidney support, blood pressure and pain management (arthritis is underdiagnosed in cats) become the priorities.
Senior-cat conditions are the expensive ones
Kidney disease, thyroid treatment and dental work add up over a cat's later years โ and none of it is coverable once it's pre-existing. Cat insurance averages $32/month in 2026; it's cheapest locked in young.
