How Long Do Gerbils Live?

Gerbils live 3 to 4 years, a little longer than hamsters and a lot longer than mice, and they get there best in same-sex pairs with a deep bedding pile to dig in. Loneliness, wire wheels and sugary mixes are what cut it short.

TL;DR: Gerbils typically live 3 to 4 years, some 5. Record: Sahara, 8 years. Keep them in bonded same-sex pairs, give 20 to 30 cm of diggable bedding, a solid wheel and a plain diet, and watch for scent-gland tumours in older males.

Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for gerbils. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.

What actually adds years

A bonded same-sex pair. Gerbils are colony animals; single gerbils are stressed and shorter-lived. Pair littermates young; introduce strangers only with a split-cage method, because declanning fights are serious.

Deep bedding. 20 to 30 cm of paper or hemp bedding in a tank-style enclosure lets them build the burrow system their stress hormones expect. Bar cages with shallow trays are the wrong home.

A solid wheel and no plastic tubes. Wire wheels and mesh break tails and toes; gerbils chew plastic into their gut. Solid wheel of 20 cm plus, cardboard and wood to shred.

Plain food, sand bath. A gerbil mix without excess sunflower seeds, hay to nibble, a chinchilla-sand bath for the coat. No sugary treats.

Watch older males for scent-gland tumours. A crusty, growing lump on the belly scent gland is common in ageing males and removable early. Also watch for seizures (some lines are epileptic and grow out of it) and Tyzzer's disease in stressed young gerbils.

Never lift by the tail. The tail skin degloves. Scoop with both hands.

A young gerbil that is hunched, wet around the tail and lethargic may have Tyzzer's disease. It is stress-linked, fast and often fatal without antibiotics. Vet the same day, and separate cage-mates for observation.

Gerbil lifespan FAQ

How long do gerbils live?

Mongolian gerbils, the common pet species, live 3 to 4 years typically and 5 with excellent care. Fat-tailed gerbils live 5 to 7. The Guinness record is Sahara, 8 years and 4 months.

Do gerbils live longer than hamsters?

Yes, by about a year on average: 3 to 4 against 2 to 3 for Syrian hamsters. They also live in pairs, which hamsters cannot.

How old is a 2-year-old gerbil in human years?

By life stage, roughly a person in their late forties. A 3-year-old gerbil is a senior, like someone in their mid-sixties. Use the converter above.

What do gerbils usually die of?

Old age and tumours (scent gland in males, others), Tyzzer's disease in stressed youngsters, and injuries from fights or wire wheels.

Can gerbils live alone?

They can survive alone but do not thrive; a bonded same-sex pair is the welfare standard. If a partner dies, an older gerbil can often be paired with a young one using a split cage.

Why is my gerbil having seizures?

Some gerbil lines carry a form of epilepsy that shows in young animals under stress and usually fades with age. Keep handling calm and quiet; a vet visit rules out other causes.
