How Long Do Betta Fish Live?
Bettas live 2 to 5 years and can reach 7, and the cup they were sold in has nothing to do with the tank they need. A heated, filtered 20-litre tank with clean water is the difference between a fish that lasts a year and one that lasts five.

How long do betta fish live? The numbers
| Type | Typical | Excellent care | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Heated, filtered tank, 20 L+ | 3 to 5 | 6 to 7 | Weekly 25 percent water changes |
| Unheated bowl or cup | 0.5 to 2 | Cold, ammonia, no oxygenation |
Betta Fish years to human years
Scaled to a typical betta in a heated, filtered tank lifespan of about 4 years. Pick a different type in the converter above and the numbers shift with it.
| Betta Fish age | Human equivalent | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 6 months | ~16 | Juvenile |
| 1 year | ~26 | Young adult |
| 2 years | ~43 | Adult |
| 3 years | ~60 | Mature |
| 4 years | ~75 | Senior |
| 5 years | ~86 | Senior |
| 6 years | ~95 | Senior |
| 8 years | ~110 | Senior |
Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for betta fish. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.
What actually adds years
Heat. Bettas are tropical: 25 to 28°C, always, with an adjustable heater. Cold bettas stop eating, get fin rot and die slowly.
Space and gentle filtration. 20 litres minimum, a filter with a gentle flow (bettas hate current), and a lid: they jump.
Clean, cycled water. Cycle the tank, test for ammonia and nitrite, change 25 percent weekly. Most betta deaths are water quality.
A varied diet. Betta pellets as the base, frozen or live bloodworms and brine shrimp as treats, a fast day a week. Overfeeding fouls water and bloats fish.
No fin-nippers, no mirrors all day. Solo is fine. Tankmates only if peaceful and non-nippy; constant flaring at a mirror is stress, not exercise.
Plants and hides. Live or silk plants and a cave reduce stress; plastic plants tear fins.
Betta Fish lifespan FAQ
How long do betta fish live?
2 to 5 years typically, up to 7 in excellent conditions. Because bettas are usually 6 to 12 months old when sold, a fish that lives 3 years in your care may have lived 4.
How long do bettas live in a bowl?
Often less than a year. Bowls are unheated, unfiltered and small; ammonia and cold do the damage. A 20-litre heated tank multiplies the lifespan.
How old is my betta in human years?
By life stage, a 1-year-old betta is a young adult (mid-twenties), a 3-year-old is around 60, and a 5-year-old is a senior. Use the converter above.
What temperature do bettas need?
25 to 28°C. Room temperature in most homes is too cold; an adjustable heater is essential.
Why did my betta die suddenly?
Usually water: ammonia or nitrite spikes, a temperature drop, or chlorine in untreated tap water. Sometimes jumping out of an uncovered tank.
Can betta fish live with other fish?
Some can, in a large enough tank with peaceful, non-nippy species. Never with another male betta, and rarely with females outside a proper sorority setup.
