How Long Do Cockatoos Live? Lifespan by Species

Cockatoos live 40 to 60 years and hold the parrot longevity record at 83. They are also the parrots most likely to be rehomed at 5, because the emotional load is real. Both facts belong in the same paragraph.

TL;DR: Cockatoos typically live 40 to 60 years: umbrella and moluccan 40 to 60 (some to 80), sulphur-crested 40 to 70, galah 40 to 60, goffin's 30 to 40. Record: Cookie, a Major Mitchell's cockatoo, 83 years.

Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for cockatoos. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.

What actually adds years

Prevent the plucking spiral. Cockatoos pluck and self-mutilate from boredom, anxiety and hormonal frustration more than any other parrot. Foraging toys, a predictable routine, no cuddling under the wings, and early vet help when feathers start disappearing.

Diet and weight. Galahs and many cockatoos get fat and grow fatty tumours on seed-heavy diets. Pellets, vegetables, measured nuts.

Test for PBFD. Psittacine beak and feather disease is a virus that cockatoos carry and die from. Test new birds before they meet others.

Sleep and structure. 12 hours of dark sleep and a schedule. Cockatoos that stay up with the household get hormonal, loud and destructive.

A succession plan. Any cockatoo will outlive most owners. Guardian, instructions, money.

Feather loss with abnormal new feathers or a crumbling beak may be PBFD. Psittacine beak and feather disease is contagious and usually fatal. Isolate the bird and see an avian vet for a PCR test.

Cockatoo lifespan FAQ

How long do cockatoos live?

40 to 60 years for most species, with sulphur-crested and moluccans reaching 70 to 80. Goffin's are the shortest-lived common pet cockatoo at 30 to 40. Cookie holds the record at 83.

What is the oldest cockatoo ever?

Cookie, a Major Mitchell's cockatoo at Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, died in 2016 aged 83, the oldest verified parrot.

How long do umbrella cockatoos live?

40 to 60 years typically, some past 70. Umbrellas are the most emotionally demanding pet parrot and are often rehomed young for that reason.

Boredom, anxiety, hormones, disease or all four. It is a welfare emergency, not a cosmetic one, and early avian-vet involvement gives the best chance of stopping it.

Do cockatoos live longer than macaws?

Similar ranges. Cockatoos hold the verified record (83); large macaws have well-documented individuals in the 70s and 80s too.
