How Long Do Parrots Live? Lifespan by Species
Parrot is a family, not a species, and the family runs from a budgie that is old at 8 to a macaw that can outlive its owner. The species you have sets the range; diet, an avian vet and daily flight decide where inside it you land.

How long do parrots live? The numbers
| Type | Typical | Excellent care | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budgie | 5 to 10 | 12 to 15 | Seed-only diets halve it |
| Lovebird | 10 to 15 | 20 | Pairs bond hard; single birds need you |
| Cockatiel | 15 to 25 | 25 to 30+ | Night frights, chronic egg laying in hens |
| Conure | 15 to 30 | 30 | Loud, cuddly, prone to feather picking |
| Quaker | 20 to 30 | 30 | Fatty liver on seed diets |
| Senegal | 25 to 30 | 40 to 50 | Quiet for a parrot; one-person birds |
| Eclectus | 20 to 40 | 45 | Needs a low-fat, high-fibre diet |
| African grey | 40 to 60 | 60 to 70 | Calcium, UV light, mental work |
| Amazon | 40 to 60 | 70 | Watch weight and blood vessels |
| Cockatoo | 40 to 60 | 70 to 80 | Record 83; needs a succession plan |
| Macaw | 35 to 60 | 70 to 80 | Space, diet, and a plan for after you |
Parrot years to human years
Scaled to a typical budgie / parakeet lifespan of about 7.5 years. Pick a different type in the converter above and the numbers shift with it.
| Parrot age | Human equivalent | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 6 months | ~10 | Youngster |
| 1 year | ~17 | Youngster |
| 2 years | ~27 | Young adult |
| 3 years | ~36 | Young adult |
| 4 years | ~45 | Prime adult |
| 5 years | ~54 | Prime adult |
| 6 years | ~63 | Mature |
| 8 years | ~78 | Senior |
| 10 years | ~89 | Senior |
Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for parrots. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.
What actually adds years
A pellet-based diet. Seed-only feeding is the biggest single lifespan thief in pet parrots: fatty liver, atherosclerosis and vitamin A deficiency. Aim for 60 to 75 percent formulated pellets, daily vegetables, seeds and nuts as treats or training rewards.
An avian vet, before there is a problem. Parrots hide illness until they cannot. A baseline exam with bloodwork, then annual checks, catches heart, liver and calcium problems years early.
Flight and work. Daily out-of-cage flight or foraging keeps weight and blood vessels healthy and prevents the boredom that turns into feather destruction.
Sleep, light and air. 10 to 12 hours of dark, quiet sleep; natural or full-spectrum light; and no non-stick (PTFE) cookware fumes, aerosols or smoke, which kill birds fast.
Succession. A grey or macaw bought at 30 can outlive you. Naming a guardian and a fund is part of responsible ownership, not morbidity.
Parrot lifespan FAQ
How long do parrots live?
It depends on the species. Budgies 5 to 10 years, cockatiels 15 to 25, conures and quakers 20 to 30, African greys, Amazons and cockatoos 40 to 60, large macaws up to 70 or 80. Diet and vet care decide where in the range a bird lands.
What is the longest-living parrot?
The verified record holder is Cookie, a Major Mitchell's cockatoo at Brookfield Zoo, who died in 2016 aged 83. Claims of 100-year-old parrots exist but lack hatch records.
Which parrot lives the longest as a pet?
Cockatoos, large macaws, Amazons and African greys all commonly reach 50 or more with good care. Among small parrots, Senegals and Indian ringnecks are the long-livers at 25 to 30 plus.
Why do parrots live so long?
Slow metabolisms for their size, strong antioxidant defences and unusually good cellular repair. Flight-capable animals in general live longer than similar-sized mammals.
How old is my parrot in human years?
Use the converter above: it scales your bird's age against its species' typical lifespan. A 25-year-old African grey is roughly a 43-year-old human by life stage; a 5-year-old budgie is around 54.
What shortens a parrot's life the most?
All-seed diets, no vet care, no flight, and household toxins (non-stick fumes, smoke, aerosols). Those four account for most early parrot deaths.
