🌸 My Cat Ate a Lily. Which Lilies Are Deadly?

Every part of a true lily is deadly to cats: two leaves, a nibbled petal, pollen groomed off the fur, a drink of vase water. Kidney failure follows within 24 to 72 hours, and once the kidneys stop making urine, most cats die. Treated in the first 6 to 18 hours, most survive. So the two questions are: which lily, and how long ago? Answer them below and go.

TL;DR: True lilies (Lilium: Easter, tiger, Asiatic, Oriental, stargazer, rubrum) and daylilies (Hemerocallis): any exposure is an emergency, go now. Vomiting can be induced early, then 48 to 72 hours of IV fluids prevents most kidney failure if started within about 18 hours. Peace lily, calla lily and other arums burn the mouth (drooling, pawing at the face) but do not attack the kidneys. Lily of the valley affects the heart. Dogs get an upset stomach from true lilies, nothing more.

Your cat's weight plus what went in gives the dose per kilo and the urgency. Estimating? Assume the worst case.

Which lilies are toxic to cats?

PlantToxic to cats?Effect
True lilies (Lilium): Easter, tiger, Asiatic, Oriental, stargazer, rubrum, Japanese show, wood lilyDeadlyAcute kidney failure from any part, pollen or vase water
Daylilies (Hemerocallis)DeadlySame kidney failure
Lily of the valley (Convallaria)DangerousHeart rhythm toxin (cardiac glycosides)
Peace lily, calla lily, arum, flamingo flowerPainfulCalcium oxalate crystals: mouth burning, drooling, swelling; not kidney-toxic
Peruvian lily (Alstroemeria), lily turf, water lilyMildStomach upset at most

The toxin in true lilies is not identified; it is water-soluble and present in leaves, flowers, pollen and the water the stems stand in. Dogs are not affected beyond an upset stomach. Bouquets are the usual source, especially at Easter, Mother's Day and in sympathy arrangements: check every bunch before it comes into a house with a cat.

Symptoms and timeline

Time after exposureWhat you may see
0 to 12 hoursVomiting, drooling, loss of appetite, lethargy. Sometimes nothing at all. This is the window in which treatment prevents kidney failure.
12 to 24 hoursThe vomiting may settle and the cat looks better: a dangerous false recovery.
24 to 72 hoursKidney failure: drinking and urinating more, then producing no urine, vomiting again, weakness, dehydration, seizures, death without dialysis.

What the vet will do

Induce vomiting if the exposure was recent, wash pollen off the coat, give activated charcoal, run baseline kidney bloodwork and urinalysis, and admit the cat for 48 to 72 hours of aggressive IV fluids with repeat bloodwork. Started within about 18 hours, this prevents kidney failure in most cats. Cats already in anuric kidney failure need dialysis, which few clinics have, and the outlook is poor.

What to do right now

  1. Identify the plant: a photo of the flower and leaves is enough for the vet.
  2. Go now for any true lily or daylily contact, or call while someone drives: Pet Poison Helpline (US/CA) 855-764-7661 · ASPCA Animal Poison Control 888-426-4435 · Animal PoisonLine (UK) 01202 509000 · Ireland and elsewhere: your vet or the nearest emergency clinic. Poison lines charge a fee; they are worth it.
  3. Wipe visible pollen off the fur with a damp cloth so the cat cannot groom more of it in.
  4. Do not wait for vomiting to stop or for the cat to seem fine; the false recovery at 12 to 24 hours fools people.

Lilies (cats) FAQ

How much lily is toxic to a cat?

Any amount: two leaves, a petal, pollen groomed off the coat, or a drink of vase water have all caused kidney failure. There is no safe dose.

My cat brushed against lily pollen. Is that dangerous?

Yes, if it was a true lily or daylily: cats groom the pollen off and swallow it. Wipe it off, then call and expect the vet to recommend fluids and kidney checks.

How long does it take for lily poisoning to affect a cat?

Vomiting and lethargy within 12 hours, kidney failure over 24 to 72 hours, with a deceptive lull in between. Treatment must start within about 18 hours to work reliably.

Are peace lilies toxic to cats?

Peace lilies and calla lilies burn the mouth (calcium oxalate crystals) and cause drooling and pawing at the face, but they do not cause the kidney failure that true lilies do. Still a vet call, especially if the mouth swells.

Can a cat survive lily poisoning?

Yes, most cats treated within 18 hours with 48 to 72 hours of IV fluids recover fully. Survival drops sharply once kidney failure and reduced urine production have begun.
