How Long Do Leopard Geckos Live?

Leopard geckos are the long-haul lizard: 10 to 20 years is normal, and 25 is not unheard of. They fail early on the same short list every time: cold floors, no calcium, sand, and too many waxworms.

TL;DR: Leopard geckos typically live 10 to 20 years; males often reach 20 and individuals pass 25. Belly heat, calcium with D3, a humid hide, no loose sand and a lean diet are the levers.

Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for leopard geckos. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.

What actually adds years

Belly heat, not just a lamp. Leopard geckos digest with their bellies on warm ground: an under-tank heater on a thermostat, warm side 30 to 33ยฐC surface, cool side around 24. Cold geckos stop eating and waste.

Calcium and vitamin D3. Dust insects with calcium plus D3 a few times a week and leave a small dish of plain calcium in the tank. Low-level UVB helps but is optional if D3 is supplemented; without either, metabolic bone disease follows.

A humid hide. A moist hide (damp sphagnum or paper towel) lets the gecko shed cleanly. Stuck shed on toes cuts off circulation and geckos lose toes for want of a damp box.

Solid substrate. No calcium sand, no loose sand for juveniles: impaction is a classic killer. Tile, paper towel or a proper bioactive mix.

A lean, varied diet. Crickets, dubia roaches and mealworms as staples; waxworms and butterworms as rare treats. Fat geckos get fatty liver disease.

Quarantine and hygiene. Cryptosporidiosis (wasting, stick tail) spreads between geckos and has no cure. Quarantine new animals, wash hands, get a faecal test.

A gecko whose tail has gone thin and pencil-like is wasting. Stick tail means it is burning fat reserves: parasites, crypto, cold or illness. Reptile vet promptly; weight loss in a leopard gecko is never cosmetic.

Leopard Gecko lifespan FAQ

How long do leopard geckos live?

10 to 20 years typically. Males often reach 20 and well-kept individuals pass 25; females average a little less because egg laying is costly.

Do male or female leopard geckos live longer?

Males, on average, by several years. Females lay eggs even without a male, which costs calcium and energy every season.

How old is a 5-year-old leopard gecko in human years?

By life stage, roughly a person around 30: a mature adult, nowhere near old. A 15-year-old gecko is in its late sixties. Use the converter above.

What do leopard geckos die of?

Impaction from loose substrate, metabolic bone disease from no calcium and D3, fatty liver from too many waxworms, cold-induced digestion failure, and cryptosporidiosis.

Can leopard geckos live 30 years?

Individual claims approach 30 in expert hands. Plan for 15 to 20 and treat more as a bonus.

Do leopard geckos need UVB?

Not strictly if D3 is supplemented properly, but low-level UVB (2 to 5 percent) improves calcium metabolism and activity and many reptile vets now recommend it.
