How Long Do Cockatiels Live?
A cockatiel is a two-decade commitment: 15 to 25 years is normal, and the bird a ten-year-old picks out can be alive when that child finishes university. Diet, night frights and chronic egg laying are where those decades get lost.
Cockatiel age in human years
Life-stage equivalence scaled to the typical lifespan of the type you pick. Enter your cockatiel's age.
How long do cockatiels live? The numbers
| Type | Typical | Excellent care | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Well-kept cockatiel | 15 to 25 | 25 to 30+ | Pellets, daily veg, safe flight |
| Seed-only cockatiel | 10 to 14 | 15 | Fatty liver, obesity, poor feathering |
| Chronic-laying hen | often shorter | Calcium depletion, egg binding |
Cockatiel years to human years
Scaled to a typical cockatiel (pellet diet) lifespan of about 20 years. Pick a different type in the converter above and the numbers shift with it.
| Cockatiel age | Human equivalent | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | ~8 | Youngster |
| 2 years | ~14 | Youngster |
| 5 years | ~26 | Young adult |
| 8 years | ~36 | Young adult |
| 10 years | ~43 | Prime adult |
| 12 years | ~50 | Prime adult |
| 15 years | ~60 | Mature |
| 20 years | ~75 | Senior |
| 25 years | ~86 | Senior |
Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for cockatiels. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.
What actually adds years
Pellets, greens and a gram scale. Convert from seed slowly (weeks). Fatty liver disease is the classic cockatiel killer and it is diet-made. Weigh weekly; a 10 percent drop is a vet visit.
A night light. Cockatiels are famous for night frights: a thrashing panic in the dark that breaks blood feathers and wings. A dim night light and a quiet room prevent most of them.
Egg-laying control for hens. Some hens lay clutch after clutch and deplete calcium until they bind an egg. Fewer daylight hours, no dark hidey-holes, no stroking the back, and a vet plan if it persists.
Air quality. Cockatiels are dusty birds and sensitive lungs; they also die from non-stick fumes, smoke and aerosols. Ventilate, avoid PTFE cookware, no candles or sprays near the bird.
Flight and company. Daily flight and a lot of human time. A bored cockatiel screams, plucks and eats out of boredom.
Cockatiel lifespan FAQ
How long do cockatiels live?
15 to 25 years typically. Cockatiels on seed-only diets often die at 10 to 14; well-kept birds regularly pass 20 and verified records exceed 30.
What is the oldest cockatiel?
Guinness recognised Sunshine of Albuquerque at 32 in 2016, and older individual claims exist without records. Past 30 is exceptional; 20 to 25 is a realistic goal.
How old is a 10-year-old cockatiel in human years?
Roughly a person in their early forties by life stage: mature, not old. A 20-year-old cockatiel is like someone around 75. Use the converter above.
Do male or female cockatiels live longer?
Males slightly, on average, because hens carry the egg-laying risks: calcium depletion, egg binding and reproductive tumours. Managing laying closes most of the gap.
Can cockatiels live 30 years?
A few do, always with a pellet-based diet, an avian vet, safe flight and no chronic laying. Plan for 20 plus when you bring one home.
Why did my cockatiel die suddenly?
Most sudden deaths have a hidden cause: fatty liver from seed diets, a night fright injury, egg binding, or toxic fumes from non-stick pans or aerosols.
