How Long Do Parakeets (Budgies) Live?
Budgies live 5 to 10 years in most homes and can pass 15 in the best ones. That gap is almost entirely diet: the seed-only budgie dies of fatty liver in its first decade, the pellet-and-veg budgie sees its teens.

How long do parakeets live? The numbers
| Type | Typical | Excellent care | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budgie (American) | 5 to 10 | 12 to 15 | Pellets plus veg; tumours common after 5 |
| English budgie | 5 to 8 | 10 | Bred for size; heart and liver load |
| Bourke's parakeet | 10 to 15 | 15+ | Calm; suits aviaries |
| Quaker parakeet | 20 to 30 | 30 | Fatty liver on seed diets |
| Indian ringneck | 25 to 30 | 30+ | Long-lived; daily handling matters |
| Alexandrine | 25 to 30 | 30+ | Large parakeet, large lifespan |
Parakeet years to human years
Scaled to a typical budgie (american parakeet) lifespan of about 7.5 years. Pick a different type in the converter above and the numbers shift with it.
| Parakeet age | Human equivalent | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 6 months | ~10 | Youngster |
| 1 year | ~17 | Youngster |
| 2 years | ~27 | Young adult |
| 3 years | ~36 | Young adult |
| 4 years | ~45 | Prime adult |
| 5 years | ~54 | Prime adult |
| 6 years | ~63 | Mature |
| 8 years | ~78 | Senior |
| 10 years | ~89 | Senior |
Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for parakeets. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.
What actually adds years
Pellets and vegetables, not a seed cup. Seed-only budgies get fatty liver disease, obesity and vitamin A deficiency. Convert gradually to a pellet base with daily greens; millet becomes a treat.
Flight time every day. A budgie in a small cage that never flies gets fat and dies young. Out-of-cage flight in a bird-safe room is exercise, not a luxury.
An avian vet exam and a gram scale. Budgies hide illness. A weekly weigh-in catches the 10 percent loss that means trouble; a first vet visit sets a baseline.
Sleep and iodine. 10 to 12 hours of covered, dark sleep. An iodine block or iodine-supplemented food prevents goitre, a classic budgie problem.
Hens: watch for chronic egg laying. Egg-binding and calcium depletion shorten female lives. Fewer daylight hours, no nest boxes and no cosy dark corners reduce laying.
Parakeet lifespan FAQ
How long do parakeets live?
Budgies, the parakeets sold in most pet shops, live 5 to 10 years typically and 12 to 15 with excellent care. Larger parakeets such as Indian ringnecks and quakers live 20 to 30.
How long do budgies live in captivity?
5 to 10 years on average, mostly because of seed-heavy diets and lack of flight. Well-kept budgies regularly reach 12 to 15. The Guinness record is Charlie, 29 years and 2 months.
How long do English budgies live?
5 to 8 years. English (show) budgies are bred for size and carry more heart and liver load than the wild-type American budgie.
How old is my budgie in human years?
A rough life-stage guide: a 2-year-old budgie is like a person in their late twenties, a 5-year-old around 54, and an 8-year-old around 78. Use the converter above.
Why do budgies die suddenly?
Usually a hidden illness that finally showed: fatty liver, tumours (budgies are tumour-prone after 4 or 5), or heart disease. Night frights and toxic fumes cause some sudden deaths. Weekly weighing catches most of the slow ones.
Do parakeets live longer in pairs?
Company helps welfare, and a pair keeps each other active, but lifespan is driven by diet, flight and vet care. A single budgie with a lot of human interaction does fine.
