How Long Do Chinchillas Live?

Chinchillas live 10 to 15 years and can pass 20, an extraordinary run for a rodent. They die early of heat, teeth and sugar: a warm room, a hay-poor diet and treats do more damage than any disease.

TL;DR: Chinchillas typically live 10 to 15 years, 15 to 20 with excellent care. Record: Radar, 29 years. Cool temperatures (below 21°C), unlimited hay for teeth, no sugary treats, dust baths and a big cage are the levers.

Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for chinchillas. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.

What actually adds years

Keep them cool. Chinchillas cannot sweat and their coat is the densest of any land mammal. Above about 24°C they risk heat stroke; keep the room at 15 to 21°C, with tiles or a granite slab to lie on in warm weather.

Unlimited hay. Chinchilla teeth grow all their lives. Grass hay all day wears them; without it, malocclusion (overgrown molars) causes drooling, weight loss and a slow, painful death.

Boring food, no sugar. A plain chinchilla pellet in measured amounts, hay, water. No raisins, no fruit, no yogurt drops: sugar means bloat, GI stasis and diabetes.

Dust baths, never water. A few minutes in chinchilla dust several times a week keeps the coat and skin healthy; water baths cause fungal infections and chills.

Height and company. A tall cage with platforms for jumping, and ideally a bonded same-sex companion. Bored chinchillas fur-chew.

An exotic vet for teeth. Annual dental checks catch molar spurs before they stop the animal eating.

A chinchilla that stops eating or passing droppings for 12 hours is in GI stasis. Gut stasis kills within a day or two. Warmth, fluids and an exotic vet immediately; do not wait to see if it eats tomorrow.

Chinchilla lifespan FAQ

How long do chinchillas live?

10 to 15 years typically, 15 to 20 with excellent care. The verified record is Radar, 29 years and 229 days.

How old is a 5-year-old chinchilla in human years?

By life stage, roughly a person in their mid-thirties. A 10-year-old chinchilla is like someone in their sixties. Use the converter above.

What temperature kills chinchillas?

Sustained temperatures above about 24°C are dangerous and above 27°C heat stroke is likely. Aim for 15 to 21°C year-round.

What do chinchillas usually die of?

Heat stroke, dental disease from too little hay, gastrointestinal stasis or bloat from sugary or unsuitable food, and respiratory infections in damp or drafty rooms.

Can chinchillas live 20 years?

Yes, with cool temperatures, a hay-based diet, dust baths and vet dental care. Twenty is uncommon but not rare.

Do chinchillas live longer in pairs?

Company improves welfare and activity. Lifespan is driven mainly by temperature, teeth and diet; a bonded pair helps at the margins.
