How Long Do Rats Live?
Pet rats live 2 to 3 years, which is a short, intense friendship. Their two enemies are their own lungs and their own tumours, and both respond to housing, diet and a vet who sees rats.

Life-stage equivalence scaled to the typical lifespan of the type you pick. Enter your rat's age.
How long do pet rats live? The numbers
| Type | Typical | Excellent care | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fancy rat, good care | 2 to 3 | 4 | Paper bedding, ventilation, blocks plus veg |
| Female (unspayed) | 2 to 3 | Mammary tumours common after 18 months | |
| Male | 2 to 3 | Hind-leg weakness in old age | |
| Poor husbandry | 1 to 2 | Respiratory disease dominates |
Rat years to human years
Scaled to a typical pet rat (fancy rat) lifespan of about 2.5 years. Pick a different type in the converter above and the numbers shift with it.
| Rat age | Human equivalent | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 3 months | ~14 | Youngster |
| 6 months | ~22 | Young adult |
| 1 year | ~36 | Young adult |
| 1.5 years | ~50 | Middle-aged |
| 2 years | ~63 | Senior |
| 2.5 years | ~75 | Very senior |
| 3 years | ~84 | Very senior |
| 4 years | ~98 | Very senior |
Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for pet rats. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.
What actually adds years
Air and bedding. Most rats carry mycoplasma and it flares into chronic respiratory disease with dusty or scented bedding, ammonia from dirty cages and cold drafts. Paper or fleece bedding, no pine or cedar, a well-ventilated cage cleaned often.
Company. Rats are social and single rats are stressed rats. Same-sex pairs or groups, introduced carefully.
A lean diet. A quality lab-block base plus fresh vegetables; obesity shortens rat lives and feeds tumours. Limited seeds, fat and sugar.
Consider spaying females. Mammary tumours are extremely common in unspayed does; spaying young cuts the risk sharply. Discuss with an exotic vet.
A vet who sees rats. Sneezing that persists, porphyrin (red staining) around eyes and nose, laboured breathing or a lump: early treatment adds months.
Space and enrichment. A large multi-level cage, hammocks, digging boxes and daily free-roam. Bored rats are unhealthy rats.
Rat lifespan FAQ
How long do rats live?
Pet rats typically 2 to 3 years, occasionally 4. Wild rats rarely pass a year. The Guinness record is Rodney, 7 years and 4 months.
How old is a 1-year-old rat in human years?
By life stage, roughly a person in their mid-thirties. A 2-year-old rat is like someone in their sixties, and 3 is very old. Use the converter above.
What do pet rats usually die of?
Chronic respiratory disease from mycoplasma is the biggest killer, followed by tumours (mammary in females, pituitary in both sexes), then heart failure and hind-leg degeneration in old age.
Do male or female rats live longer?
Roughly the same. Females face mammary tumours; males face hind-leg weakness and are more often obese. Spaying females shifts the odds in their favour.
Can a rat live 5 years?
Very rarely. Four is exceptional. Plan for 2 to 3 and make them good ones.
Why is my rat sneezing?
New rats sneeze from stress and new smells for a few days. Persistent sneezing, red staining around the nose, or noisy breathing is respiratory disease and needs a vet.
