How the calculation works
Chocolate is toxic to dogs because of two stimulants they metabolise very slowly: theobromine and caffeine (together called methylxanthines). The danger is a function of three things: how concentrated the chocolate was, how much was eaten, and how much your dog weighs.

We total the methylxanthines and divide by your dog's weight. Veterinary references associate roughly 20 mg/kg with mild signs, 40–50 mg/kg with cardiac toxicity, and 60+ mg/kg with seizures. We deliberately use the upper end of published concentration ranges, so the tool errs on the side of caution.
Symptom timeline
Signs usually appear 6–12 hours after ingestion and can persist up to 72 hours. Early: vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, excessive thirst. Escalating: panting, racing heart, hyperactivity, frequent urination. Severe: tremors, seizures, arrhythmias.

How much chocolate is toxic to a dog?
It depends on dose per body weight. Mild signs start around 20 mg/kg of methylxanthines, serious cardiac signs around 40–50 mg/kg, seizures around 60 mg/kg. For a 20 lb (9 kg) dog, that's roughly 3 oz of milk chocolate for mild signs — but only about half an ounce of baking chocolate.
My dog ate chocolate but seems fine. Should I worry?
Symptoms take 6–12 hours to appear, so "seems fine" one hour later means very little. Run the numbers above; if the dose is in the caution range or higher, call your vet even if your dog looks normal.
Can a dog die from chocolate?
Yes, though it's rare with prompt treatment. Deaths are usually associated with very high doses (100–200+ mg/kg) or untreated seizures and arrhythmias. Small dogs plus dark or baking chocolate are the highest-risk combination.

Is white chocolate dangerous?
Not for methylxanthine poisoning — it has ~0.25 mg/oz, about 1/230th of milk chocolate. The fat and sugar can still cause stomach upset or, occasionally, pancreatitis.
My dog ate cocoa powder or brownie mix — is that worse?
Much worse per ounce. Dry cocoa powder is the most concentrated form of theobromine (~737 mg/oz) — roughly 13x milk chocolate. Even small amounts justify a call to your vet for any dog.
