How Long Do Goldfish Live?

Goldfish live 10 to 15 years in a filtered tank, 20 or more in a pond, and about a year in a bowl. The fish is the same; the water is not. Nothing else on this page matters as much as tank size and the nitrogen cycle.

TL;DR: Goldfish typically live 10 to 15 years in a properly filtered tank; common and comet goldfish in ponds reach 20 plus; fancy goldfish 8 to 12. Record: Tish, 43 years. Bowls cut lives to 1 to 3 years.

Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for goldfish. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.

What actually adds years

Space and filtration. A single common goldfish needs 100 litres or more and a filter rated above the tank volume; they grow to 20 to 30 cm. Fancy goldfish need at least 75 litres for the first fish. Bowls are a death sentence measured in months.

Cycle the tank and test the water. Ammonia and nitrite from fish waste are the real killers. Cycle before adding fish, test weekly, change 25 to 30 percent of the water weekly.

Cool, stable temperature. Goldfish are cold-water fish: 18 to 22°C is ideal, no heater, no sudden swings.

Feed less than you think. Overfeeding fouls water and bloats fancies. Sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, a fast day a week; feed what disappears in two minutes.

Choose tankmates carefully. Goldfish with tropical fish is a temperature mismatch; with fin-nippers, a welfare problem. Goldfish with goldfish is the safe answer.

A goldfish gasping at the surface or with red-streaked fins is being poisoned by its own water. Test for ammonia and nitrite, do a large water change now, and fix the filtration. It is the most common goldfish emergency and the most fixable.

Goldfish lifespan FAQ

How long do goldfish live?

10 to 15 years in a properly sized, filtered tank; 20 to 30 in ponds; fancy goldfish 8 to 12. In a bowl, usually 1 to 3 years.

What is the oldest goldfish?

Tish, a goldfish won at a fair in Yorkshire in 1956, lived 43 years and holds the Guinness record. Pond goldfish in their 30s are documented.

Why do goldfish die so fast in bowls?

No filtration means ammonia builds within days, no surface area means low oxygen, and no space means stunting. The fish is not short-lived; the bowl is.

How old is a 5-year-old goldfish in human years?

By life stage, roughly a person around 30 for a tank goldfish. Use the converter above; pond fish age slower against a longer typical span.

How big does a goldfish get?

Common and comet goldfish reach 20 to 30 cm; fancies 15 to 20. Size follows tank size only up to a point: stunted fish are not healthy fish.

Do goldfish need a heater?

No. They are cold-water fish and do best at 18 to 22°C. Heaters belong with tropical fish.
