How Long Do Macaws Live? Lifespan by Species
A large macaw is a fifty-year decision. Blue-and-golds commonly reach 30 to 50, green-wings and hyacinths pass 50, and the mini macaws still manage 20 to 30. Diet, space and a plan for after you are the three questions before the bird.

Macaw years to human years
Scaled to a typical blue-and-gold macaw lifespan of about 40 years. Pick a different type in the converter above and the numbers shift with it.
| Macaw age | Human equivalent | Life stage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | ~4 | Youngster |
| 5 years | ~16 | Youngster |
| 10 years | ~26 | Young adult |
| 15 years | ~34 | Young adult |
| 20 years | ~43 | Prime adult |
| 25 years | ~52 | Prime adult |
| 30 years | ~60 | Mature |
| 40 years | ~75 | Senior |
| 50 years | ~86 | Senior |
Life-stage equivalence, not biology: no validated ageing clock exists for macaws. It is still the right way to think about vet schedules and senior care.
What actually adds years
Diet built for the species. Most macaws thrive on pellets plus vegetables with nuts as rewards; hyacinths are the exception and need a high-fat nut diet. Wrong diet means fatty liver, atherosclerosis or malnutrition.
Space and flight. A macaw needs room to open its wings and a daily flight or climb session. Cramped macaws pluck, scream and get fat.
An avian vet from day one. Baseline bloodwork, then annual exams. Proventricular dilatation disease and aspergillosis are easier to manage early.
Beak and toy budget. Macaws destroy wood for a living. A steady supply of chewable toys prevents boredom and self-mutilation.
Succession planning. A macaw bought at 25 may live past its owner. Name a guardian, leave instructions and money.
Macaw lifespan FAQ
How long do macaws live?
Large macaws typically 35 to 60 years, with individuals reaching 70 to 80. Blue-and-gold 30 to 50, scarlet 40 to 50, green-winged 50 to 60, hyacinth 50 plus. Mini macaws 20 to 30.
What is the oldest macaw on record?
Individual macaws in the 70s and 80s are documented in zoos and private hands. Claims of macaws over 100 (Charlie the blue-and-gold is the famous one) lack verifiable hatch records.
Do hyacinth macaws live longer than blue-and-golds?
Slightly, on average: 50 plus against 30 to 50. Diet is the difference in practice; hyacinths on the wrong diet do not reach their potential.
How old is a 20-year-old macaw in human years?
By life stage, roughly a person around 40 for a blue-and-gold, and mid-thirties for a green-winged or hyacinth, which age against a longer span. Use the converter above; it scales to the species you pick.
Can a macaw outlive its owner?
Easily. Any large macaw bought after age 30 has a good chance of surviving you. Plan for it in writing.
Why do pet macaws die younger than the range?
Poor diet (all seed, or the wrong fat level for the species), no vet care, no space, and household toxins. Those four explain most macaws that die at 20 instead of 50.
