Boxer Lifespan: How Long Do Boxers Live?

Boxers live 10 to 12 years, and two things take most of the ones that go early: cancer and a heart rhythm disease that carries the breed's name.

Quick answer: Boxers typically live 10 to 12 years. Seniors from about 7. Cancer (mast cell tumours, lymphoma) and Boxer cardiomyopathy (ARVC) are the two big risks; heat is the everyday one.

How long do Boxers live?

Breed clubs quote 10 to 12 years and UK data agree. Large-breed aging: a 10-year-old Boxer is roughly a 66-year-old human.

For context, the size-class ranges we use across all breeds: small dogs 12 to 16 years, medium 10 to 14, large 9 to 12, giant 7 to 10. Individual dogs beat their breed's range all the time; the range is where the odds sit, not a ceiling.

What decides a Boxer's lifespan

Cancer

Boxers have one of the highest cancer rates of any breed: mast cell tumours, lymphoma and brain tumours. Every skin lump gets a needle sample. Most mast cell tumours are curable when caught small.

Heart: ARVC

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, known as Boxer cardiomyopathy, causes fainting and sudden death. Annual Holter monitoring from age 3, and a DNA test for the known mutation, guide management.

Heat and airway

A moderately short face plus a high-energy temperament: Boxers overheat. Exercise in the cool, water always.

Bloat, thyroid, degenerative myelopathy

Deep chest (GDV risk), common hypothyroidism, and DM in older dogs, which is DNA-testable.
