Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Lifespan: How Long Do Cavaliers Live?
Cavaliers live 10 to 14 years, and one inherited disease writes most of the difference: mitral valve disease, present in about half by age 5 and nearly all by 10. Screening and early treatment add years.

How long do Cavaliers live?
Breed clubs quote 10 to 14 years; UK data put Cavaliers around 11 to 12, below most small breeds because of the heart. Small-breed aging: a 12-year-old Cavalier is roughly a 64-year-old human.
For context, the size-class ranges we use across all breeds: small dogs 12 to 16 years, medium 10 to 14, large 9 to 12, giant 7 to 10. Individual dogs beat their breed's range all the time; the range is where the odds sit, not a ceiling.
What decides a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel's lifespan
Heart: mitral valve disease
The breed's defining problem: roughly half have a murmur by age 5, nearly all by 10, decades earlier than other breeds. Annual auscultation from age 1, an echocardiogram when a murmur appears, and pimobendan once the heart enlarges (proven to delay heart failure by more than a year in the EPIC trial).
Syringomyelia
Fluid pockets in the spinal cord from a skull too small for the brain. Signs: air-scratching at the neck or shoulder, yelping when touched, sensitivity to collars. MRI diagnoses it; pain can be managed.
Eyes, ears and knees
Dry eye and cataracts; ear infections under the feathering; luxating patellas.
Weight
Cavaliers gain easily and extra weight loads a compromised heart. Keep the waist.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel lifespan FAQ
How long do Cavalier King Charles Spaniels live?
Typically 10 to 14 years. Dogs from heart-tested lines with early treatment reach 14 or 15; untreated heart disease takes many at 9 or 10.
What percentage of Cavaliers get heart disease?
Studies consistently find murmurs in about half of Cavaliers by age 5 and in nearly all by age 10. It is the single most important health screen for the breed.
Can medication extend a Cavalier's life?
Yes. In the EPIC trial, pimobendan started at the enlarged-heart stage delayed the onset of heart failure by about 15 months. Earlier diagnosis means earlier benefit.
At what age is a Cavalier a senior?
About 8. Twice-yearly checks with heart in focus from then, annual from age 1 before that.
