Dachshund Lifespan: How Long Do Dachshunds Live?
Dachshunds live 12 to 16 years, and the back is the story. Keeping a Dachshund lean and off the sofa-to-floor jump does more for its lifespan than anything a vet can prescribe.
How old is your Dachshund in human years?
Size-adjusted vet chart, Dachshund lifespan range, life stage and a shareable ID card.
How long do Dachshunds live?
Breed clubs quote 12 to 16 years and UK data put Dachshunds among the longer-lived breeds. Small-breed aging: a 14-year-old Dachshund is about a 72-year-old human. Miniature and standard share the same range.
By variety: Standard Dachshund: 12 to 16 years; Miniature Dachshund: 12 to 16 years.
For context, the size-class ranges we use across all breeds: small dogs 12 to 16 years, medium 10 to 14, large 9 to 12, giant 7 to 10. Individual dogs beat their breed's range all the time; the range is where the odds sit, not a ceiling.
What decides a Dachshund's lifespan
The back (IVDD)
Dachshunds have the highest rate of intervertebral disc disease of any breed; estimates run from roughly one in six to one in four dogs affected in their lifetime. Keep the dog lean, use ramps, discourage jumping and stairs marathons, and treat sudden pain, wobbliness or hind-leg weakness as an emergency: the first 24 hours decide outcomes.
Weight
Extra weight loads the spine directly. Ribs easy to feel and a visible waist are non-negotiable in this breed.
Teeth
Small-jaw dental disease as in every small breed. Brush and clean.
Eyes and heart
Progressive retinal atrophy in some miniature lines; mitral valve disease in older dogs. Both are picked up on routine checks.
Dachshund life stages and human-age equivalents
| Stage | Dachshund years | Human years | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppy | under 1 | 0 to 15 | Growth, vaccines, socialisation window |
| Young adult | 1 to 3 | 15 to 32 | Adult body, teenage brain; habits and weight set now |
| Mature adult | 4 to 10.5 | 32 to 58 | Prime years; annual exams, dental care, lean weight |
| Senior | 10.5 to 16 | 58 to 80 | Twice-yearly exams and bloodwork (AAHA) |
| Golden years | 16+ | 80+ | Past the typical range: comfort first |
Human equivalents use the veterinary size-adjusted chart (small class); the senior threshold is 75% of the breed's mid-range lifespan.
Dachshund lifespan FAQ
How long do Dachshunds live?
Typically 12 to 16 years. Lean Dachshunds that avoid serious back injury often reach 15 or 16.
Do miniature Dachshunds live longer than standards?
The ranges are the same. Individual weight and back health matter far more than the size variety.
What is the leading health problem in Dachshunds?
Intervertebral disc disease. It is the reason to keep the dog lean, avoid jumping, and know that sudden hind-leg weakness is an emergency.
At what age is a Dachshund a senior?
About 10. Twice-yearly checks from then, with a hands-on look at back, teeth and heart.
Premiums rise with age, and nothing pre-existing gets covered
