Yorkshire Terrier Lifespan: How Long Do Yorkies Live?
Yorkies routinely reach the mid-teens. The short list that cuts that short: teeth, a collapsing windpipe, and the fragile-tiny-dog problems that come with two kilos of confidence.

How long do Yorkies live?
Breed clubs quote 12 to 15 years and UK data put Yorkies among the longer-lived breeds. Small dogs age slowest after maturity: a 14-year-old Yorkie is roughly a 72-year-old human.
For context, the size-class ranges we use across all breeds: small dogs 12 to 16 years, medium 10 to 14, large 9 to 12, giant 7 to 10. Individual dogs beat their breed's range all the time; the range is where the odds sit, not a ceiling.
What decides a Yorkshire Terrier's lifespan
Teeth
Tiny mouths, crowded teeth, early periodontal disease. Daily brushing and professional cleanings protect the heart and kidneys as much as the mouth.
Windpipe
Tracheal collapse produces the classic goose-honk cough. Harness instead of collar, lean weight, and treatment early when the cough starts.
Knees and hips
Luxating patellas are common; keep weight down and treat persistent skipping on a hind leg. Legg-Calve-Perthes disease of the hip shows up in young dogs as lameness.
Liver shunt and low blood sugar
Portosystemic shunt appears in Yorkie lines: poor growth, odd behaviour after meals, seizures. Toy puppies can crash their blood sugar between meals; small frequent meals in the first months.
Yorkshire Terrier life stages and human-age equivalents
| Stage | Yorkshire Terrier years | Human years | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppy | under 1 | 0 to 15 | Growth, vaccines, socialisation window |
| Young adult | 1 to 3 | 15 to 32 | Adult body, teenage brain; habits and weight set now |
| Mature adult | 4 to 10.1 | 32 to 56 | Prime years; annual exams, dental care, lean weight |
| Senior | 10.1 to 15 | 56 to 76 | Twice-yearly exams and bloodwork (AAHA) |
| Golden years | 15+ | 76+ | Past the typical range: comfort first |
Human equivalents use the veterinary size-adjusted chart (small class); the senior threshold is 75% of the breed's mid-range lifespan.
Yorkshire Terrier lifespan FAQ
How long do Yorkies live?
Typically 12 to 15 years, and 16 or 17 is common enough not to be surprising.
Is 13 old for a Yorkie?
Thirteen is senior but well within normal, about a 68-year-old human on the size-adjusted chart. Twice-yearly checks and dental care from here.
What health problems shorten a Yorkie's life?
Dental disease left untreated, tracheal collapse, and in some lines a liver shunt. Accidents matter too: a two-kilo dog is easily injured.
Do teacup Yorkies live shorter lives?
Usually. The smallest Yorkies have more hypoglycaemia, fragile bones and hydrocephalus. Teacup is a size, not a breed standard.
Premiums rise with age, and nothing pre-existing gets covered
