Cane Corso Lifespan: How Long Do Cane Corsos Live?
Cane Corsos live 9 to 12 years, better than most giant breeds. Coat colour, of all things, tracks with longevity in the one large study done on the breed, and the usual big-dog risks fill in the rest.

How long do Cane Corsos live?
Breed clubs quote 9 to 12 years. A 2017 study of more than 200 Corsos found a median of about 9.3 years, with black brindle dogs living longest (around 10.3) and grey dogs shortest (around 9). Giant-breed aging: a 9-year-old Corso is roughly a 71-year-old human.
For context, the size-class ranges we use across all breeds: small dogs 12 to 16 years, medium 10 to 14, large 9 to 12, giant 7 to 10. Individual dogs beat their breed's range all the time; the range is where the odds sit, not a ceiling.
What decides a Cane Corso's lifespan
Hips and growth
Hip dysplasia is common. Slow, lean growth on a large-breed puppy diet, and parents with hip scores.
Bloat
Deep chest: GDV risk. Smaller meals, calm after eating, gastropexy conversation.
Heart
Dilated cardiomyopathy appears in the breed. A murmur or exercise intolerance is worth an echo.
Eyes and epilepsy
Entropion, ectropion and cherry eye are frequent and surgically fixable; idiopathic epilepsy occurs in some lines.
Cane Corso life stages and human-age equivalents
| Stage | Cane Corso years | Human years | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppy | under 1 | 0 to 15 | Growth, vaccines, socialisation window |
| Young adult | 1 to 3 | 15 to 38 | Adult body, teenage brain; habits and weight set now |
| Mature adult | 4 to 7.9 | 38 to 63 | Prime years; annual exams, dental care, lean weight |
| Senior | 7.9 to 12 | 63 to 93 | Twice-yearly exams and bloodwork (AAHA) |
| Golden years | 12+ | 93+ | Past the typical range: comfort first |
Human equivalents use the veterinary size-adjusted chart (giant class); the senior threshold is 75% of the breed's mid-range lifespan.
