Greyhound Lifespan: How Long Do Greyhounds Live?
Greyhounds live 10 to 13 years, whether they came off a track or not. Bone cancer, teeth and a body with almost no fat are the specifics; the couch does the rest.

How long do Greyhounds live?
Breed clubs and adoption groups quote 10 to 13 years for both racing-bred and show-bred Greyhounds. Large-breed aging: a 10-year-old Greyhound is roughly a 66-year-old human.
For context, the size-class ranges we use across all breeds: small dogs 12 to 16 years, medium 10 to 14, large 9 to 12, giant 7 to 10. Individual dogs beat their breed's range all the time; the range is where the odds sit, not a ceiling.
What decides a Greyhound's lifespan
Bone cancer
Osteosarcoma is the leading cause of death in the breed. A persistent limp or a swelling on a leg bone gets an X-ray promptly.
Teeth
Greyhounds have notoriously bad periodontal disease, partly genetic, partly the soft diets many racers ate. Brushing and regular cleanings.
Bloat
Deep chest: GDV risk. Smaller meals and calm after eating.
Sighthound physiology
Low body fat and different liver enzymes make Greyhounds sensitive to some anaesthetics and prone to cold. Feet corns, thin skin tears and a naturally low thyroid reading (normal for the breed) round out the specifics.
Greyhound life stages and human-age equivalents
| Stage | Greyhound years | Human years | What matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppy | under 1 | 0 to 15 | Growth, vaccines, socialisation window |
| Young adult | 1 to 3 | 15 to 35 | Adult body, teenage brain; habits and weight set now |
| Mature adult | 4 to 8.6 | 35 to 59 | Prime years; annual exams, dental care, lean weight |
| Senior | 8.6 to 13 | 59 to 82 | Twice-yearly exams and bloodwork (AAHA) |
| Golden years | 13+ | 82+ | Past the typical range: comfort first |
Human equivalents use the veterinary size-adjusted chart (large class); the senior threshold is 75% of the breed's mid-range lifespan.
Greyhound lifespan FAQ
How long do Greyhounds live?
Typically 10 to 13 years, and 14 or 15 for lucky, well-kept dogs.
Do retired racing Greyhounds live shorter lives?
Not measurably. Track life can leave old injuries and worse teeth, but adopted racers reach the same 10 to 13 range.
At what age is a Greyhound a senior?
About 8. Twice-yearly checks with attention to teeth, lumps and any lameness.
Why are Greyhound teeth so bad?
A breed tendency to heavy tartar and periodontal disease, made worse by the soft raw diets many racing kennels feed. Dental care is the top routine item for the breed.
