Labrador Retriever Lifespan: How Long Do Labradors Live?

Labs live 11 to 13 years on average, and the best-known feeding study in veterinary medicine was done on this breed: lean-fed Labradors lived almost two years longer than their free-fed littermates.

Quick answer: Labradors typically live 11 to 13 years. Seniors from about 8. In the Purina lifetime study, lean-fed Labs lived a median 13 years against 11.2 for the well-fed group. Weight is the lever.

How long do Labradors live?

Breed clubs quote 10 to 12 and VetCompass UK data put Labradors around 12, one of the better large breeds. Chocolate Labs came out shorter-lived than yellow and black in a large UK study (about 10.7 years against 12.1), with more skin and ear disease. Large-breed aging: a 12-year-old Lab is roughly a 77-year-old human.

By variety: Yellow Labrador: 11 to 13 years; Black Labrador: 11 to 13 years; Chocolate Labrador: 10 to 13 years.

For context, the size-class ranges we use across all breeds: small dogs 12 to 16 years, medium 10 to 14, large 9 to 12, giant 7 to 10. Individual dogs beat their breed's range all the time; the range is where the odds sit, not a ceiling.

What decides a Labrador Retriever's lifespan

Weight, and the gene behind it

Around a quarter of Labs carry a POMC gene variant that blunts fullness signals. Overfeeding is the breed's default failure. Ribs easy to feel, visible waist, measured meals, treats counted.

Joints

Hip and elbow dysplasia and cruciate tears are the everyday orthopaedic story. Lean weight and steady exercise protect them; a limp that lasts a week gets X-rays.

Cancer and laryngeal paralysis

Lymphoma and mast cell tumours are the common cancers. Noisy breathing and exercise intolerance in an older Lab can be laryngeal paralysis, which is treatable.

Ears and skin

Chronic ear infections and allergies are the most frequent Lab visits; small problems if handled early, real quality-of-life problems if not.

Labrador Retriever lifespan FAQ

How long do Labradors live?

Typically 11 to 13 years. Lean, active Labs from health-tested lines regularly reach 14 or 15.

Do chocolate Labs live shorter lives?

In one large UK study, yes: about 10.7 years against 12.1 for black and yellow, alongside more skin and ear disease. The likely reason is the smaller gene pool behind the colour, not the colour itself.

What is the leading cause of death in Labradors?

Musculoskeletal disorders and cancer lead in the UK data, with obesity as the common thread underneath many of them.

Is 12 old for a Labrador?

Twelve is senior, roughly a 77-year-old human on the size-adjusted chart, and past the breed's median. Twice-yearly checks and joint support are the routine.
