Tabby Cat Lifespan: How Long Do Tabby Cats Live?

Tabby is a coat pattern, not a breed, so a tabby's lifespan is a domestic cat's lifespan: 12 to 18 years indoors, and an average of about 11.7 across all UK cats once outdoor deaths are counted. The pattern tells you nothing about longevity; where the cat sleeps at night, its weight and its neuter status tell you almost everything.

TL;DR: Tabby cats typically live 12 to 18 years indoors. Tabby is a pattern found on domestic shorthairs and many breeds; the UK VetCompass life expectancy at birth for crossbred cats is 11.9 years. Indoor or catio living, neutering, lean weight, dental care and kidney screening from age 7 are the levers.

How long do tabby cats live?

Domestic shorthairs (most tabbies) are quoted at 12 to 18 years, and indoor moggies commonly reach 15 to 18. The 2024 UK VetCompass life tables put crossbred life expectancy at birth at 11.9 years, above purebred cats (10.4). Females live about 1.3 years longer than males on average.

What decides a Tabby's lifespan

Indoor, catio or roaming. The biggest lever for a moggy. Roads, fights, FIV/FeLV, poisons and lost cats make up most early deaths. Indoor cats with a window, play and a catio get the range; roaming cats average years less.
Neutering. Neutered cats live longer: no pyometra or mammary tumours in females, far less roaming, fighting and FIV in males. Banfield's data had neutered males living about 60 percent longer than intact males.
Weight and diabetes. Indoor tabbies get fat. Obesity drives diabetes, arthritis and urinary disease. Measured meals, wet food and a monthly weigh-in; a healthy adult moggy is usually 3.5 to 5 kg.
Kidneys and thyroid after 7. Chronic kidney disease and hyperthyroidism are the two big senior diseases. Bloodwork every year from 7 to 10 and twice a year after 11 finds both while they are treatable.
Teeth. Dental disease is nearly universal by middle age and drives pain, weight loss and kidney strain. Brushing or dental diets, and cleanings when needed.

Tabby lifespan FAQ

How long do tabby cats live?

12 to 18 years indoors, like any domestic shorthair. Across all UK cats, most with outdoor access, life expectancy at birth is 11.7 years (11.9 for crossbreds). Tabby is a coat pattern and does not change lifespan.

How long do orange tabby cats live?

The same as any other tabby. About 80 percent of orange tabbies are male, and males live about 1.3 years less than females on average, which is the only real difference.

How long do indoor tabby cats live?

Commonly 15 to 18, sometimes 20. Indoor cats avoid the roads and infections that account for most early deaths; weight, teeth and kidneys become the whole story.

How old is a 12-year-old tabby in human years?

About 64: a senior. Twice-yearly checks with kidney and thyroid bloodwork and blood pressure from here.

Is a tabby a breed?

No. Tabby is the striped, spotted or ticked coat pattern of the wild ancestor, and it appears on domestic shorthairs, Maine Coons, Bengals, American Shorthairs and many more.
