Maine Coon Lifespan: How Long Do Maine Coons Live?

Maine Coons usually live 12 to 15 years, and the number that decides where yours lands is the heart. Around a third of the breed carries a mutation for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, so the single best thing a Maine Coon owner does is get the heart checked, then keep the weight off a frame that is already carrying a lot.

TL;DR: Maine Coons typically live 12 to 15 years. UK VetCompass life expectancy at birth is lower, just under 10, because heart disease and early deaths pull the average down. HCM screening (echo, plus the MYBPC3 DNA test), lean weight and joint care are the levers.

How long do Maine Coons live?

Breed clubs and most veterinary references quote 12 to 15 years for a Maine Coon; the 2024 UK VetCompass life tables put life expectancy at birth at just under 10, one of the lower pedigree figures. Life expectancy at birth counts kittens and young cats that die of HCM, FIP or accidents; a Maine Coon that reaches 5 in good health has better odds than that headline suggests.

What decides a Maine Coon's lifespan

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The breed's defining risk. The MYBPC3 A31P mutation is common (roughly a third of Maine Coons carry it in screening studies) and cats without the mutation still develop HCM. Ask the breeder for parents' echo results, and echo your own cat around 2 to 3 years, then every couple of years. Early treatment slows clot and heart-failure risk.
Hip dysplasia and joint disease. Big frame, slow growth to 3 to 5 years, and a tendency to gain weight: Maine Coons have the highest hip dysplasia rate of any cat breed. Keep them lean, give ramps rather than jumps in later years, and treat arthritis pain when it appears; a cat that stops jumping is telling you something.
Spinal muscular atrophy and PKD. SMA (LIX1 gene) is a tested recessive: affected kittens develop hind-end weakness by 3 to 4 months. Polycystic kidney disease turns up occasionally. Both are DNA tests a responsible breeder runs; ask.
Weight. A 9 kg Maine Coon is not automatically fat, but many are. Extra kilos load the hips, the heart and the pancreas. Weigh monthly; feel for a waist under the ruff.

Maine Coon lifespan FAQ

How long do Maine Coons live?

Typically 12 to 15 years. Well-kept indoor Maine Coons reach 15 and beyond; the UK VetCompass life expectancy at birth of just under 10 reflects heart disease and early deaths across the whole population.

What do most Maine Coons die of?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and its complications (heart failure, aortic thromboembolism) lead. Kidney disease and cancer follow in older cats, as in every breed.

How old is a 10-year-old Maine Coon in human years?

About 56. Cats reach roughly 24 human years at age 2 and add about 4 human years per cat year after that. A 10-year-old Maine Coon is a mature adult approaching senior; annual bloodwork and blood pressure checks are due.

Do Maine Coons live longer indoors?

Yes, on average. Outdoor access adds road, fight and infection risk. Maine Coons are also poor at road sense; a catio or supervised garden time gives them the outside without the average dropping.

Is 12 old for a Maine Coon?

It is senior, roughly a 64-year-old human, and inside the typical range. Twice-yearly vet checks with kidney values, thyroid and blood pressure from here on.
