Bengal Cat Lifespan: How Long Do Bengals Live?

Bengals are quoted at 12 to 16 years by breed sources, yet the 2024 UK life tables gave them one of the shortest life expectancies at birth of any breed, 8.5 years. That gap is the Bengal story: a healthy, indoor, heart-clear Bengal lives a long life; a roaming one, or one with HCM or a bad line, often does not.

TL;DR: Bengals typically live 12 to 16 years when kept indoors and screened for HCM. UK VetCompass life expectancy at birth is 8.5 years, well below the average cat, most likely from road deaths in an athletic breed plus heart disease. Indoor or catio living and an echocardiogram are the levers.

How long do Bengals live?

Breed clubs quote 12 to 16 years. The 2024 UK VetCompass life tables put Bengal life expectancy at birth at 8.5 years, second lowest of the breeds studied. The study does not say why; the plausible drivers are an athletic, curious breed that roams and meets traffic, HCM, and a relatively young UK population where deaths skew young. Take the low figure as a warning about roaming and heart screening, not as a ceiling.

What decides a Bengal's lifespan

Roaming and roads. Bengals climb, jump, open doors and want out. Outdoor Bengals die on roads at rates that drag the breed average down. A catio, a secure garden or harness walks give them the stimulation without the risk.
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. HCM occurs in Bengals and there is no single DNA test for it in the breed. An echocardiogram at 2 to 3 years, repeated every few years, is the screen; breeders should echo their breeding cats annually.
Bengal PRA and PK deficiency. Bengal progressive retinal atrophy (PRA-b) blinds young cats; pyruvate kinase deficiency causes intermittent anaemia. Both are DNA tests. Ask for both parents' results.
FIP and the young-cat gap. Bengals appear more often than expected in feline infectious peritonitis case series. FIP is now treatable with antivirals, but early recognition matters: a young Bengal that is off food, feverish or pot-bellied needs a vet quickly.
Diet and stomach. Bengals are prone to chronic diarrhoea and food sensitivities. A stable, high-meat diet and prompt work-up of loose stools protect weight and condition.

Bengal lifespan FAQ

How long do Bengal cats live?

Typically 12 to 16 years for indoor, heart-screened Bengals. UK VetCompass life expectancy at birth is 8.5 years, one of the lowest of any breed, which reflects road deaths and heart disease across the whole population rather than the potential of a well-kept cat.

Why is Bengal life expectancy so low in the UK study?

The paper does not say. The likely mix: an adventurous breed that roams and meets traffic, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and a young breed population in which deaths skew young. Indoor Bengals with clear echos are not described by that number.

How old is a 5-year-old Bengal in human years?

About 36. A young adult in its prime; a good time for the first echocardiogram if it has not been done.

Should Bengals be indoor cats?

Yes, with a catio, secure garden or harness walks for stimulation. Roaming is the single biggest lifespan risk for the breed.

Is 12 old for a Bengal?

Senior, roughly a 64-year-old human, and inside the typical range for a well-kept Bengal. Twice-yearly checks with kidney and heart attention from here.
