Sphynx Cat Lifespan: How Long Do Sphynx Cats Live?

Sphynx cats have the shortest life expectancy of any breed in the 2024 UK life tables: 6.7 years at birth, against a population average of 11.7. Breed sources still quote 8 to 14, and well-kept Sphynx do reach it, but the reason for the gap is clear and mostly one disease: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which turns up in around a third of screened Sphynx.

TL;DR: Sphynx cats are quoted at 8 to 14 years, but UK VetCompass life expectancy at birth is 6.7, the lowest of any breed studied. HCM is the main reason (very common in the breed), with skin, dental and respiratory problems behind it. Annual echocardiograms from age 2, warmth, skin care and dental care are the levers.

How long do Sphynx cats live?

Breed sources quote 8 to 14 years. The 2024 UK VetCompass life tables put Sphynx life expectancy at birth at 6.7 years, the lowest figure of any breed in the study and five years under the average cat. That is a population figure that includes cats dying young of HCM and respiratory disease; a Sphynx with a clear annual echo and good husbandry can reach the breed range.

What decides a Sphynx's lifespan

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Screening studies find HCM in roughly a third of adult Sphynx, more than any other breed. There is no complete DNA test for it in the breed. Echo at 2 years and every year after; a murmur, fast resting breathing or a sudden hind-leg paralysis (a clot) are emergencies. Early medication reduces clot risk.
No coat: heat, sun and skin. Sphynx lose heat fast and burn in sun. Keep the house warm, provide heated beds, and expect weekly baths: the oily skin traps dirt and yeast, and skin infections are common. Sunscreen or shade for windowsill cats.
Teeth and gums. Periodontal disease and severe gingivitis are common in the breed. Daily brushing from kittenhood and dental cleanings under anaesthesia when needed; ask about a pre-anaesthetic echo.
Respiratory infections in kittens. Sphynx kittens are prone to upper respiratory infections and pneumonia, part of the young-death share in the data. Choose a breeder who raises kittens warm and vaccinated, and act fast on sneezing, discharge or fast breathing.
Hereditary myopathy. A congenital myasthenic syndrome (COLQ mutation) causes muscle weakness in some Sphynx and Devon Rex. It is a DNA test; ask.

Sphynx lifespan FAQ

How long do Sphynx cats live?

Breed sources say 8 to 14 years. The 2024 UK VetCompass study measured life expectancy at birth at 6.7 years, the shortest of any breed, mostly because hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is so common. Screened, warm, well-kept Sphynx reach the breed range.

Why do Sphynx cats have such a short lifespan?

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy first, found in around a third of screened Sphynx. Add kitten respiratory disease, skin and dental problems, and heat loss, and the population average sinks well below the cat average.

How old is a 6-year-old Sphynx in human years?

About 40. Middle-aged, and past the age where a first echocardiogram should already have been done.

Can a Sphynx live to 15?

Some do, always with annual heart screening, warmth, weekly skin care and dental care. Plan for the breed's needs from day one; there is no cheap Sphynx.

Do Sphynx cats need to be indoors?

Yes. No coat means sunburn, chilling and no protection in fights. Indoor, warm, with a heated bed.
