Persian Cat Lifespan: How Long Do Persians Live?

Persians live 12 to 17 years when the two breed problems are handled: polycystic kidney disease, which a DNA test can now breed out, and the flat face, which cannot be tested away and shapes breathing, tears, teeth and heat tolerance for life. Get a PKD-clear kitten and manage the face, and a Persian is a long-lived cat.

TL;DR: Persians typically live 12 to 17 years. UK VetCompass life expectancy at birth is just over 10, pulled down by kidney disease and flat-face complications. A PKD1-negative kitten, kidney bloodwork from age 7, dental care, daily face and coat grooming and a cool house are the levers.

How long do Persians live?

Breed sources quote 12 to 17 years. The 2024 UK VetCompass life tables put Persian life expectancy at birth just over 10 years, below the crossbred figure of 11.9. Polycystic kidney disease, once present in around a third of the breed, and brachycephalic problems account for much of the gap; PKD testing has cut the disease sharply in tested lines.

What decides a Persian's lifespan

Polycystic kidney disease. The PKD1 mutation causes cysts that enlarge through life and can end in kidney failure in middle age. It is a simple DNA test; buy from breeders who test both parents, and if your Persian is untested, test now and start kidney bloodwork early. Historically about a third of Persians carried it.
The flat face. Narrowed nostrils and a compressed airway make heat and exertion dangerous, tear ducts overflow and stain, and crowded teeth decay early. Keep the house cool, wipe eyes daily, brush teeth, and take snoring or open-mouth breathing seriously. Extreme faces carry more of all of it.
Coat and skin. The coat mats within days without brushing, and matting causes skin infections. Persians are also prone to ringworm and to eye problems (entropion, corneal sequestrum). Daily grooming is a health task.
Heart and bladder. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and urinary stones occur in the breed. A murmur or straining in the tray both need a vet promptly.

Persian lifespan FAQ

How long do Persian cats live?

Typically 12 to 17 years. UK VetCompass life expectancy at birth is just over 10 years, with polycystic kidney disease and flat-face problems accounting for most of the difference. PKD-tested, well-groomed indoor Persians regularly reach the upper range.

What do Persian cats usually die of?

Kidney disease (polycystic kidney disease and chronic kidney disease) leads, followed by heart disease and cancer. Breathing and heat problems cause some acute deaths.

How old is an 8-year-old Persian in human years?

About 48: a mature adult. Kidney bloodwork should be annual by now, earlier if the cat was never PKD tested.

Should I PKD test my Persian?

Yes if it was not done by the breeder. It is a cheek swab or blood test, and a positive result changes how early and how often the kidneys are checked, and whether the cat should be bred (it should not).

Is 14 old for a Persian?

Senior, roughly a 72-year-old human, and inside the typical range. Twice-yearly checks, kidney and blood pressure monitoring, and gentle grooming sessions from here.
